Understanding Moxibustion Techniques for Menstrual Pain Relief

1. Salt Moxibustion

Begin this treatment 3 to 5 days before your menstrual cycle and continue daily until it ends. One menstrual cycle constitutes one complete treatment, and it is recommended to repeat this for three cycles.
2. Ginger Moxibustion
In Ginger Moxibustion, slice fresh ginger and place it on the belly button and Guanyuan point. Again, use moxa wool sized like a broad bean or jujube seed and position it on the ginger slice. Light the moxa and perform the session 3 to 5 times, lasting about 10 to 30 minutes each. Start this treatment 3 days before your menstrual period and continue until the pain subsides. Like salt moxibustion, carry out this method for three consecutive menstrual cycles.
3. Salt and Ginger Moxibustion
The Salt and Ginger Moxibustion method combines the benefits of both. Begin by placing a suitable amount of salt on the belly button and Guanyuan point, followed by ginger slices on the salt. Use moxa wool of the same size and ignite it over the ginger. Carry out 3 to 5 moxibustion sessions, lasting about 10 to 30 minutes each. This should start 3 to 5 days before menstruation and continue until it ends, similar to the previous methods.
4. Moxa Stick Treatment
In the Moxa Stick Treatment, light a moxa stick and use it to gently heat the abdomen, lower back, and inner calves. When you feel warmth penetrating the skin, this can gradually relieve pain. Sessions should last 2 to 3 minutes for each area, commencing 3 to 5 days before your menstrual cycle and repeating daily for five days. Again, this forms one treatment cycle.
5. Fuzi Cake Moxibustion
To perform Fuzi Cake Moxibustion, crush fuzi (aconite) into a fine powder and form it into a cake. Place it on painful areas such as the abdomen or lower back. Place moxa wool on top, ignite it, and conduct moxibustion for 3 to 5 sessions lasting 10 to 30 minutes. This should commence 3 to 5 days before menstruation and continue for five days.
6. Herbal Moxibustion
For Herbal Moxibustion, grind equal parts of safflower, golden seal, ligusticum wallichii, and Corydalis into a fine powder. Mix with a small amount of yellow wine to create a medicinal cake. Place this cake on the belly button and Guanyuan point, putting moxa wool on top. Ignite the moxa and perform 3 to 5 sessions, lasting about 10 to 30 minutes each. This treatment starts when menstrual pain appears and continues daily until the pain subsides.
7. Liquid Herbal Moxibustion
In Liquid Herbal Moxibustion, apply herbal solutions like Danshen extract, Angelica injection, or safflower injection to the painful area using a cotton swab. Following this, use a lit moxa stick on the same areas, ensuring the heat penetrates deeply for about 10 to 30 minutes. Start this regimen 3 to 5 days before menstruation and continue for five days.
8. Medicinal Tincture Moxibustion
Lastly, the Medicinal Tincture Moxibustion involves using Yunnan Baiyao tincture or other herbal oils applied to the painful areas. As with previous methods, follow this with gentle moxibustion over the treated spots to promote deep heat penetration, lasting 10 to 30 minutes for about five days before your menstrual period.
